Rare 1963 Wide World of Sports Sportsman of the Year Acrylic Piece. ABC’s Wide World of Sports was an American sports anthology television program that aired on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) from April 29, 1961 to January 3, 1998.In 1963, ABC Sports producers began selecting the Athlete of the Year. Its first winner was track and field star Jim Beatty for being the first to run a sub-4-minute mile indoors.Brumel, who is named and imaged in this acrylic piece, broke the world record six times, with his leap of 2.28m in 1963 lasting as the world’s highest ever clearance until 1970.We are not sure if these were given to athletes who had been in the running for Athlete of the Year, or if it was a sample, or something else. The piece measures 5 inches wide by 4 inches tall and is 1 inch thick. There are surface scratches.
